DAY WITHOUT ART —- WORLD AIDS DAY DECEMBER 1, 1996 AT THE VANCOUVER ART GALLERY The World AIDS Day events began as bagpipes played under the Joe Average Banner on the steps of the VAG and over two hundred people from Vancouver's cultural communities gathered with the public to mark three minutes of silence in remembrance of those lost to the AIDS epi- demic. After this moving tribute, the crowds filed into the Gallery to view the Unveiling of the Canadian NAMES AIDS Quilt Panel by the sister and friend of VAG staff member Christopher Duclos. The Vancouver Mens’ Chorus program of music and a reading of letters to individuals affected by HIV and AIDS, presented by the Out West Performance Society fol- lowed. It was a time of heightened and heartfelt emotion that the Gallery rarely sees within its white walls. The VAG's donation box filled rapidly with all admission donations for the day going to local AIDS service organizations who also had volunteers out in full force staffing the Information Table in the front lobby and dis- tributing red ribbons through the downtown core. Perhaps the most moving visual symbol for the day was the Names Tree outside the Gallery, where local residents hung the names of loved ones lost to AIDS. In the short space of time of the VAG’s scheduled two hour programme, dozens of names and notes were placed within the Tree’s branches. It was sunny on Sunday, so the ink used to write the names stayed clear and wasn’t washed away within minutes of writing — even if it had been, the memory of these loved ones will last long past the time that these ‘Days Without Art’ end and AIDS is eradicated. ECIAD’S DAY WITHOUT ART As part of the student group exhibition, “Memento Mori, The Art of Remembrance: Death, Grieving and Transformation”, ECIAD also com- memorated December 1st by lining the Concourse Gallery walls with the signs THE GALLERY IS EMPTY and DAY WITHOUT ART. The Statement posted at the entrance to the exhibit read: Today is World AIDS Day, also known as a “Day Without Art” in commemoration of those individual artists who have died from AIDS or who are currently living with the disease. No one knows how much art has been lost or will continue to be lost because of AIDS. Today we pay tribute to these artists by leaving the gallery empty in celebration of their memory. —Cindy Spence Photograph by Jonathan Lander December 1996 / Planet of the Arts 27 Qi GONG / ZHI NENG by Josh Aronovitch Qi Gong sessions have been held once a week since the beginning of the semester. At the beginning of term, about thirty people were showing up to our sessions. Since then the number has dwindled to about.six” regulars. This is probably due to high workloads and high stress level that come with the end of semester. They are too stressed out to do stress reduction. It's really too bad they can’t keep attending because Qi Gong does a lot for you at times when you need to keep your productivity high and your mind clear. In our sessions, we do several different exercises. These include visual- ization (of colours, light, animals, places, etc.), stimulation of energy gates (hands, feet, forehead, spine, etc.), fundamental martial arts moves, and meditations. Some of these exercise forms can be used for self-healing, i.e. eliminat- ing headaches, backaches, neck tension, and other chronic pains. Sessions are usually conducted in three sets of exercises: standing, sitting, and personal requests. An example of the latter is someone stating, “| have a headache,” and instructor Steve Wong then teaches the group how to get rid of a headache using Qi Gong and/or Zhi Neng methods. Amazing! Even if they didn’t notice “the energy flowing,” or if they thought it was “a crock of shit,” “mumbo jumbo,” or “psychosomatic hocus pocus,” 98% of people who attend Qi Gong sessions leave feeling better than when they arrived. We encourage people with any pain or discomfort, as well as those who seek more energy out of daily life to attend our sessions. The only thing you need to bring to class is an open mind. Everyone is welcome!
