RAE PAIN Ty BOX Exhibitions ANCOUVER has been very lucky in its art exhibitions during the past year. In August a travelling exhibit from The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York was here during Exhibition week and proved a veritable feast to all lovers of art. In the collection were pictures by famous artists of various schools. In The British section Reynolds, Raeburn and Hoppner were represented, and in the French, Dutch and American schools were examples of the work of Greuze, Bastien-Lepage, Harpignies, Anton Mauve, Josef Israels, Leon Dabo, Will H. Low, W. M. Chase, Tryon and Wyant. These pictures afforded lovers of art the opportunity of seeing pictures they might never have seen, and I am sure the exhibition is remembered by a very appreciative public. Our gifted Director, Charles H. Scott, held a successful one-man show in November, which included etchings, water-colors, pastels and one or two oils. He proved himself master of the various media, but in the general consensus of opinion it was considered that he found his highest expression in his etching. We are very pleased to congratulate him on having been “awarded special honorable mention for work exhibited in the etching section of The Canadian Society of Graphic Art, Toronto. Mr. Scott’s exhibit consisted of four etchings, made on a recent visit to Europe. This honor has been awarded in only four instances throughout the various classifications, two in Toronto, one in Winnipeg, and Mr. Scott’s in Vancouver”. At James Leyland’s Fine Art Gallery there have been two exhibitions of interest, one from The Carrol Galleries and the other from The Cooling Galleries, both of London. Each contained a representative collection of old and modern paintings and water colors by English and European masters, including Clausen, Olsson, Munnings, Brangwy, James Maris, Blommers, Con- stable and Velasquez. The gallery of the B. C. Art League has been completely renovated, and the pictures are now shown to much greater advantage than betore, “At present there is a loan collection on view, consisting of oils, water colors, pastels, etchings, pencil sketches and prints, a great many of which we hope to have in the new Art Gallery that is soon to become a reality through. the generosity of Mr. Stone and other public-spirited citizens. The Vanderpant Galleries—a recent acquisition to Vancouver—opened with a beautiful collection of pictures, and notable etchings by Whistler, Seymour, Haden, Corot, Millet, Matthew Maris and Legros. A number of oils pastels and water colors are on view, and a superb collection of artistic photographs the work of H. Mortimer Lamb and J. Vanderpant, both of this city, who have received high awards in this branch of art, and attained international recognition.
