The Simon Fraser Gallery Spring Exhibition Programme. TENTH ANNIVERSARY SEASON Jan. 5 - 30: MUSICAL MANUSCRIPTS - Sixty illustrated musical manuscripts by twentieth century composers. Selected for their visual interest from a collection assembled by John Cage, the manuscripts illustrate a variety of approaches from classical composition to abstraction. For the most part, they represent avant-garde concepts. Many of the composers in- cluded have been influential in shaping changing directions of musical notation. Among the artist/composers included are The Beatles, Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, John Cage, Aaron Copland, Marcel Duchamp, Yoko Ono, Steve Reich, Erik Satie, and Igor Stravinsky. Media range from pencil on paper to watercolour, collage, a map with acetate overlays, embossment, silkscreen, and ink on vellum. The exhibition was developed by The Drawing Centre in New York City. It is curated by Mr. Don Roberts, Music Librarian, Northwestern University, which is the source of the collection. The exhibition is circulated by SITES, Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. March 9 - 27: RECENT ACQUISITIONS: The Simon Fraser Collec- tion. A selection of major accessions to the Univer- sity’s art collection made since 1977. Among the works to be exhibited are recent Inuit and Native - graphics, paintings by J. Fenwick Lansdowne, Robert Sinclaire, Ken Wallace, Leslie Poole, Kay Graham and Sylvia Tait; works on paper by William Kurelek, and Pat Martin Bates; graphics by Alex Col- ville, Greg Cunroe, Ken Danby, Alistair Bell and others. International artists to be included are Jesus Raphael Soto, Claus Oldenburg and Roy Lichiens- tein. April 6 - May 6: RITES OF PASSAGF:: The Symbolic Textiles of In- donesia from the Collection of Mary Hunt Kahlenberg. A comprehensive selection of thirty-two textiles of outstanding quality from the Indonesian Archipelago, the home of one of the most sump- tuous and original textile traditions. The date of the works in this exhibition range from mid-nineteenth century to about 1960. The textiles show the elaborate techniques of ikat, plangi, batik as well as works embellished with embroidery, brocading, beading, painting and stencilling in gold.
