Kier-La investigated and found that the sec- ond half said "that any doubt in matters of whether a film has artistic merit must be resolved in favour of freedom of expression. That was the rest of the fucking sentence!" Kier-La, ensuring the termination of Laurie Soloway’s contract, used the same quote, the whole quote, in her next missive. As well, Soloway argued that McCausland's opinion - even though it was the subject of the appeal- was the absolute. She also attempted to proclaim Necromantik's worthlessness by citing other films as being good, which apparently was supposed to indicate Jorg's was bad. And, of course, the local Kissed came up. "It's a fine film, whatever," says Kier-La, "but it's basically the Pretty In Pink of necrophilia movies. It's not realistically [applica- ble to the argument]." At the end of her final letter, Kier-La wrote, "After careful and repeated viewings of the film, Necromantik, I was of the opinion that this matter should be resolved in favour of free- dom of expression, and that this decision should be left to the international artistic community as a whole." A particularly lengthy period ensued which included delays such as when the board didn't have enough copies of the film, (Kier-La, who doesn't have any contraband, wouldn't give them her copy, which she doesn't have) when they all went on vacation, and when the board discovered they didn't actually have enough people to legally be a board. Around mid-August, Kier-La received a courier. "I looked through, and I was just like, holy shit! Holy shit! And I just kept reading, and I fucking won the case! Like, I knew that my case was better than their case, but I still didn't think we would win just because of the bureaucracy of the whole thing. They're basically all employed by the Attorney General, and I'm just one person." Final word: the appeals board, who "even sounded positive, almost as if they enjoyed watching the film, which is strange", decided that the ratings board was choosing whether the art was good or:bad, not, as is their mandate, whether it was tol- erable to the community. Necromantik was set free. The rest of Jorg Buttgereit's films remain banned, how- ever, and as of this point, Necromantik has no Canadian distribu- tor, which means that, while Kier-La's perseverance reversed the ban, the movie is still technically illegal to rent. This is annoying, but it does not spell out the crappy ending to the story. Kier-La is currently considering becoming a distributor herself. In the end, I can only say this: I am stupified by Kier- La's passion. I am currently completing my degree -with protest- at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and she far surpass- es the drive and ambition of my peers. She begins where most of us would have quit, where we would have looked ahead and decided the road too difficult. She is an inspiring person with whom to be acquainted, moreso perhaps because she seems unaware of her unique nature.
