Terry jabbed one wing of her nurse’s cap in firm place atop smoothed blonde swirls and reached for another bobby pin. Thinking about joining the staff of Seavale Community Hospital had led inevitably to accepting Dr. Caldwell’s offer. She had known that the night he had first asked, even though she had not been able to bring herself to a decision then. Driving home with Hal, listening to his scornful condemnation of Seavale’s shabbiness, of the tousled “asleep-at-the-switch” doctor, she had found herself springing angrily to Earl Caldwell’s defense. Of course, he had been asleep. But how did they know what hours he had put in that day? Doctors slept when a they could—and worked when needed. Babies weren't born only during office hours, and you couldn't sched- ule earaches, stomach-aches, a burst appendix— “Okay, Okay,” Hal had shushed her grumpily. “Thought you were all through with that Florence Nightingale nonsense. When feeding its baby it holds the little one between its arms, and the heads of the two, appearing above the waves, made sailors think that the dugong was a sort of human being. What is this obsession with competition that sur- rounds our lives and has leaked into this school. Art is not about competi- tion; it is about anything else. In the Concourse Gallery there was a compe- tition for students who had completed the first month of school in their first year. It is bad enough that juried shows are present in galleries outside the school. How can people judge creative pieces? Enjoying, hating or being bored by the work is natural, but to form a commitee and judge which work will go into an exhibit or receive a prize is disgusting, petty and does not belong in the artworld. The fact that students are pitted against one another serves no purpose, the students become too concerned with what their work looks like: it is a negative action.
