True Romance a fim by Tony Scott reviewed by Tristesse Seeliger Now where to start when discussing thie new movie True Romance by Hollywood bad-boy writer Quentin Tarantino, the genius who brought us Resevoir Dogs? | could talk about the slew of hot young actors, or the talented veteran actors such as Dennis Hopper or Christopher Walken, that this film boasts to attract its audience. could also falk about the two main characters played by Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette. So | will. | am disappointed that such actors as Gary Oldman, Val Kilmer, and Brad Pitt make the decision to participate in a film such as this one. Gary Oldman is a talented man and could choose to make films that entertain and illuminate life beyond the adrenaline rush gimmick that is used throughout True Romance. | believe that Hopper and Walken could do much better as well, but of course, it is their own choice as free thinking artists to make good cash on big budget Hollywood films. My favorite scene in the movie has Hopper and Walken in an interrogation which builds raw tension and displays their abilities as actors. | found the violence in the film offensive. Violence is aggressive, insulting and humiliating to me when completely gratuitous. | don't think there is anything cool about beating the shit out of a young woman to the point where she must kill to defend herself. | turned my - head in that scene because | had to listen to my queasy public art public | SSU@S october 23 to ovember 20 olunteer pportunities: lease call Ruth at 689 5811 Also: Stanley Park stomach. The violence in the movie doesn’t pose too many questions about motivation to kill, unless you think taking a device from the ghost of Elvis is reason enough. Basically, all the characters are two dimentional (except for the pimp played by Gary Oldman ... Nah, he was too) and therefore, life and death affect them about as much as a papercut would. After the kill, every character in the film is bouncing and behaving like the two silicon tits on the leading lady. The two main characters are picture perfect models for any clothing company targeting young, healthy white humans in this wonderful North American society. They both are tough yet vulnerable and ready to do the wild thing at any moment. Neither of the two are all that intelligent, but they sure are cute and that’s what really counts, doesn’t it? Don’t get me wrong, | liked the good looking men as much as any red blooded Canadian girl might, but | kick myself for being seduced on that criteria alone. Alas, | think it is more important when viewing a movie like True Romance to ask yourself some questions. How did this film affect me? Am | going to quit school, steal a car, fuck wildly and start a rock band? Am | going to go out and buy yet another pair of Levis, drink some Coke and smoke more cigarettes? Was it me, the lucky viewer of this fine film, that benefitted from the whole experience or was it someone else? Maybe | missed the point and | am being too god-damned serious about things, man! But in my opinion this film, on the whole, was garbage. © 2 90 B22 8020 8202s Be RAL) : ij VOTO, TaKOmenae se ai09e) New work by 240 contemporary artists from British Columbia Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 8pm The Woodward's Building 101 West Hastings Street Vancouver, British Columbia Burrard Bridge Blood Alley Brothers Keeper a film by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky reviewed by Rich Sinclair Well, this film was a trip. If you consider yourself in touch with the smaller farming communities of North America, see this film and you may reconsider. Brothers Keeper is a documentary film that brings to us a really quite funny, yet sad and endearing tale of misinformation and misunderstanding. The four Ward brothers live on a dairy farm in New York State. Bill dies and Delbert is accused by the State of murder. We get to find out why he was accused, why the brothers said what they did and why no one in the community could believe that Delbert murdered his beloved brother. A fairly basic story line, the beauty of the film being the whacked-out content. The Ward brothers are most certainly eccentric individuals. | thought | knew what “raised simply on the farm meant “. This film shows how our society in its complexity tends to misinterpret simple-living folk. The Ward boys are into farming. They are FARM. So much are they farmers that their awareness of their lifestyle is not apparent nor at all important . Farming for the Wards is life and life just is. Isolation is a strong element in ‘the boys’ "lives. Illiteracy is apparent and becomes a problem for Delbert when questioned by the police. This raises questions about communication in general. You can probably imagine a convoluted situation. Berlinger and Sinofsky filmed the Ward brothers’ world the best that they could, which is very intrusive at the beginning of the film. All three of the brothers reacted defensively to the filmaker's presence. Gradually, they warm up to Joe and Bruce. Some sense of friendship was established. The loose camera work made me sea-sick from freehand jiggle. That's okay. | laughed alot.
