Page Nine Second Year Drawing and Painting 6 aa class is made up of the students who have decided to specialize in Drawing and Painting, rather than Design. Therefore, Drawing and Painting take up the greater part of our time-table, with a certain amount of work in the Principles of Design. Commercial Art, Modelling, and Costume Design are three optional subjects, of which the student must select one. Architecture may also be included. Our class teacher, Mr. F. Horsman Varley, is a recent arrival in this province, coming here in September from Toronto. His early art train- ing was taken in Sheffield, England, and Antwerp. This was followed by a number of years in London doing Commercial Illustrations and portrait work. His early work in Canada was mainly Commercial IIlus- tration, varied by landscape paintings of Northern Ontario. During the War, he was one of the artists commissioned by the Government to do paintings for the War Records Department. Since the war, he has been engaged in portrait work and mural decoration. Our work with him in class has been characterized by a certain breeziness quite unusual to some of us, but as time goes on, we enjoy it more and more. The entire winter term was taken up with charcoal drawing, both from the model, and from the antique. In February, a few were promoted to the dignity of oils, and many monochrome studies of casts were made. And now we are entering upon a more interesting phase of the work, still life groups in color. We are allowed to set up our own groups, and then we forge ahead, with trepidation at first, but with increasing confidence as we notice Mr. Varley silently drifting around the class, ready with help and advice to the needy. Design | ‘HE Second Year Design course is quite a comprehensive one, taking in several subjects besides Design, but all related to it and useful to our work in that department. Mr. J. W. G. MacDonald, our class teacher, joined the School Staff in September. He comes to us from Lincoln, England, after gaining experience in the Applied Arts in the Sundour Fabrics
