Our Survey Says... Influx Questions the Public on what they Think of ECIAD by Sean Clancy It was a typical Vancouver day; grey, overcast, devoid of any colour, save for grey. Myself and my helpful photographer, Allan Hart (not his real name), walked up to Broadway, a mere three blocks away, to find out what people thought about Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, or if in fact they knew about it at all. I was surprised by how many people were turned off as soon as I approached them, thinking that I wanted money or something. For instance, one lady, as soon as I approached her, put her hand in my face without missing a step, and started telling me "It's O.K. It's O.K., No Thank-You!" I never knew anything was wrong in the first place, but I guess that people are condi- tioned to think that anybody approaching them on the street is up to no good, and they have a "plan of action" already formulated, i.e. walking away from people and saying "It's O.K." Alas, there are still people out there who aren't afraid to express their opinions. And it is these opinions that I share with you today. Thanks to all who participated. We happened upon Franco at the corner of Broadway and Burrard. He was waiting for the light to change and couldn’t run and evade us. He feels that an art school such as ECIAD is a place where people’s talents can be discovered. Loger, on the corner of Granville and Broadway, was our first interviewee of many who felt that art schools are beneficial to our society and culture. 8 influx * Magazine photography by Al Hart Wishing to remain anonymous, we agreed to only use M’s first initial, a former student at VFS, she felt it was too commercially based. LOGER: "A wide range of media ranging from...anything from sculpting to photography. Anything creative." INFLUX: "Hi, have you heard of The Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design?" ONE OF FOUR GUYS CROSSING THE STREET: "Isn't that a high school in Ottawa?" INFLUX: "Do you think that there is role in the country for an art school to exist, publicly funded?" DEBBY: "Sure, why not? Just like any other school, I think." INFLUX: "What do you think of when you think of Emily Carr? The school itself, I mean." ANONYMOUS INTERVIEWEE (WOMAN): "Well, Emily Carr I know, grew up in Victoria and painted great paintings and the school's named after her, and that's what makes it famous." HER HUSBAND: "J still don't like her paintings though!" INFLUX: "That's O.K., neither do I." INFLUX: "Excuse me, do you know where the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design is?" ALL: "Hah-ha, [someone in background] You gotta' love that!" D: "The location is awesome, I love going down there, it gives Granville Island a cool vibe!" M: "It strikes me as a serious art school, not like something like the Vancouver Film School. They're all about money, I know." INFLUX: "Were you a student there?" M: "Yes. It was very commercial." INFLUX: "How do you feel knowing that tax dollars help subsidize students going there [ECIAD]?" FRANCO: "There are hidden Van Goghs. How are you going to know about them unless you give them an opportunity?" That was the end of interviews for the day, I was get- ting hungry and my photographer was cold. I must tell you two things, however. First, there is a greater base of knowledge out there about ECIAD than one would think; a lot of people know about us, and where we are located. Secondly, there was almost unanimous support that this type of institute to exist, people gen- uinely believe ECIAD enhances our city’s, and region’s cultures. February 1999 (ECIAD), isn’t that a high school in Ottawa? Our Survey Says...
