Planet of the Arts, vol.4, no.3 T H E This is the bare bones schematic layout of the route to power at ECCAD. The organizational structure of the college has been undergoing revision for the past two and a half years and is now in the final stages of completion. This chart represents the basic lines of communication and responsibility and is by no means complete. One of the major goals of this reorganization is to establish a system by which issues are resolved and ideas and policy are developed. It is hoped that by establishing criteria and standards, matters can be dealt with consistently and fairly. FROM THE TOP The Board of Trustees Board members are appointed by the ministry of Advanced Education and job training for a three year term. The board has the ultimate decision-making power and is accountable to the government for ECCAD’s adherence to the appropriate government acts. The buck stops here unless government funding or approval is required. Recommendations made by the president are usually followed though some adjustments may be required to satisfy the board. The board is the the diploma approving and granting body at the college. The President The president reports directly to the board and along with the bursar is an officer of the board. Business from the Program Advisory Committee ( more about that later ) is presented in this manner The president works closely with the bursar and the dean of academic affairs. Human resources, library services and the gallery are special cases that report directly to the president. The Bursar The bursar reports directly to the board and is primarily concerned with business and fiscal aspects of the college. The business office, school store and facilities are the direct responsibility of the bursar. TOWER OF POWER EccaA D C H A IN Associate Deans Associate deans head up the four divisions of the college ( Studio, Media, Design and Foundation As department heads they are resposible for the communucation and development of issues and programs within their specific area. Program Advisory Council This is the decision making body developed to deliberate on academic policy and proposals prior to presenting them to the board (via the president) for approval. The council consists of individuals from all areas of the college that are active in the deliberation of policy and/or the program advisory subcommittees. Program Advisory Council Membership is distributed as follows; 8 members faculty (4 division heads plus 4 faculty) 4 members staff (2 general support and 2 studio/technical assistants) 4 members administration ( bursar, directors of the library, P.T. studies and the director of student services ) 4 members students ( One from each of the four college divisions ) 2 members non-voting ( the president anda board representative ) Program Advisory Committees In addition to proposing policies for consideration by the council these committees act as advisory bodies to administration. There are 5 major committees most with sub committees of their own. 1. Course and Program Committee 2. Academic and Student Policy 3. Part Time Studies Committee 4. Library and Audio Visual Committee 5. Curriculum Equipment Committee She knows to avoid white or pastel coloured shoes... oO F Cc O MM AN D Dean of Academic Affairs This position was vacated by Tom Hudson who now holds the honorary position of Dean Emeritus. This position has not been filled due to budgetary restriction and it is hoped that this will change in the near future. The dean is to work closely with the president and is to be directly responsible for academic affairs. In addition to the full time program the dean is responsible for part time studies and student services. FROM IDEA TO POLICY step1. Ideas come from individuals, departments or groups. step2. Take idea to appropriate P.A.C. committee step3. Committee takes to council step4. Council takes recommendations to president step5. President takes council recommendations to the board Step6. Board approves recommendation and turns it into “Official Policy” The matter may be returned to the lower level for further development or adjustment at any point.
