To begin with, it is important to remember that an art college library has a collection of items specializing in the visual arts. These items are not just books, but include magazines, exhibi- tion catalogues, and reproductions of various types (such as prints, photos, slides, and so forth). However, because the study of the visual arts touches on the whole fabric of daily life, past and present, the collection of information in the library necessarily ranges over a broad spectrum of subjects: from anthropology to zoomorph, from economics to food. The catch, of course, is how you get at the information you need for your essay or project, or simply be- cause you are interested in a parti- cular theme. There are several ways of cracking a library collection, there is no set pattern or formula. Methods or habits of searching a library are established as you use the collection. The only secret is to use it regularly, even if it is only once a week. Rather than wandering up and down the rows of shelves in the hope that books will jump into your arms, or rather than leafing through a clutch of magazines in the hope they will give you some clues, or rather than going as far as asking another student for help, you may find two other approaches more useful. The most direct way to get help is to go up to a librarian or to a library assistant and say: “Help”! The assis- tance you receive this way will help you over the short haul; as long as the librarian or the library assistants have the time you will get personal help in locating the information you need. The main thing to remember is: don’t be afraid to ask, after all the people who work in the library are being paid to serve users. The other most direct way to get the information you need is to help yourself. Because most libraries today operate on a self-help basis, allowing users free access to the books on the shelves, you should become familiar with the way libraries are organized in order to save time when you start searching for that elusive bit of information needed for the essay due tomorrow morning. One essential piece of furniture to become familiar with is the card catalogue. The cards in this catalogue tell you what books are in the collection and where they are shelved. You should also learn about the specialized indexes that allow you to search back issues of magazines without having to frustra- tingly flip through each issue in a search for an article you may have been told was printed “. . . a couple or three years ago .. .I think”. However, I shall save discussion of these two library aids until the next publication of “X”’. K.
