Gower Atilla Richard Lukacs’ meat paintings, done while he was still in col- lege, indicate to me the grounding of a theme which runs throughout his work. | feel this was best described by Tricia Keith who did the “Meat Me” performance at a Coffee Night last year. When lasked her what meat represented to her she said: Human Sexuality. The series of paintings depicting gay bondage start to explore actual sexual representation which is difficult not to term homoerotic. Lukacs insists however that this was not his in- tention. This insistence is perhaps what starts one wondering about Lukacs’ responsibility for his images. When Lukacs presents us images of a very controversial type shown in a very positive bias, the responsibility ques- tion comes to a head. | am, of course, describ- ing the paintings of skinheads which toured Canada in 1989. Seen in the light of what | believe to be Lukacs’ theme, these are strong sexual works executed with incredible techni- cal poésie. But seen in the light of what skinheads mean to so- ciety (especially mi- norities), this loving de- piction , or glorification of atype, can become very sinister. | feel it is partly controversy aris- ing from the latter (in- correct?) reading which has brought about the work’s notoriety. There are of course, other factors in the work’s popularity. The quite decorative rich- ness which embellishes the subjects, especially the angel’s wings and gold leaf ground on a few of the “skinhead Salptnes is remeniscent of Jean Genet surrounding the celebrated criminal Harcamone with invis- ible garlands of roses in his novel “Miracle of the Rose”. | perceive many parallels with Genet’s career, espe- cially the critics’ igno- rance of the sexual in- tensity at the core of their work. Undeniably, Lukacs has achieved early art market success. Un- fortunately, the limelight can induce certain compromises and conventions. Lukacs’ latest show, “To Inter- ested Young Men”, seems to have the confused, dispassion- ate feel of an artist playing into the hands of his public. Even stiff realism will work in front of a strong concept, but here the gallery-sized recruitment pamphlet did not seem to delve deep enough. The ir- relevant seeming titles could have been letrasetted onto the wall at the last minute to help compensate for the inadequacy of the individual works. Tome the works were missing something quite essen- tial: The erotic base of his earlier work. One thing that causes me to trust in a return to a theme consistent with works from before this show is Lukacs’ description of his forth- coming work. | was pleasantly surprised when just at the end of his talk at the college in September, Lukacs al- luded to some works in progress which he _ Called “shit and piss “ =] paintings. | think Freud would agree to the appropri- ateness of linking this subject matter to the theme of primal eroti- cismin the earlier work. This new work seems to be very much along the lines of the tradi- tionally radical ap- proaches adopted by other explorers of primal themes, ie. Scheeman, Nitsch Genet, deSade. Will his present follow- ing accept a return to the feral themes of his earlier work? Can an enfant terrible exist in the ‘90’s? STUDENT UNION REPORT The Student’s Union has been undergoing some...renovations lately. As you have probably noticed, there has been no- body in the office at lunch hour for the last little while. I'd like to apologize for that. It makes it very hard for students that don’t know the representa- tives by sight to con- tact the Union. Katherine Setzer has, unfortunately, been unable to continue on as Chairperson, and has instead taken a partial position with Brian Morgan so that neither one is as swamped as they were before. This means that forthe last few weeks, the Stu- dents’ Union has been operating without a Chairperson, a Vice- Chairperson or a Women’s liaison. What can | say? Elections are coming and hopefully more Planet of the Arts Volume Six, Issue One will get done then. There have been a few things done that do deserve amention. First of all, Emily Carr now has its own gal- lery. No, |don’t mean the Charles H. Scott gallery! Not very many students show there and it isn’t run by students. The new gallery is on Kingsway and Fraser. Itis run by students, andis being partially funded by the Students Union. This was Organized in re- sponse to the need for a place for stu- dents to show that was exclusive to E.C.C.A.D. students, inexpensive and could provide the students with the chance to learn how to set up a show of their own.
