apr 08 Nature Challenge: Zero Waste - From Facilities and Human Resources As of January 1, 2008, Metro Vancouver has implemented the Zero Waste Challenge. This means that certain materials that are recyclable are BANNED from the garbage. These items include newspapers, cardboard and office paper (photocopy paper, letterhead, telephone books, envelopes, etc). So, please Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. If you don't know where the recycling bins are near you, please check with Facilities to find out so that you can recycle all banned materials. The planet thanks you (and so do we)! For more information on how to recycle, please visit these two websites: http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/engsvcs/solidwaste/r ecycling/howto.htm http://www.encorp.ca/cfm/index.cfm Grad Shows Undergraduate Exhibition Our Undergraduate Exhibition opens May 4 and runs through May 11 at our Granville Island Campus, 1399/1400 Johnston Street. Congratulations to Cari Bird, Senior Graphic Designer, who won the Award of Distinction Prix de Merite in the Catalogues Category at the 2008 Graphex Awards held in Vancouver on March 28. Excellent work, Cari! Also winning an Award of Distinction Prix de Merite, in the category of Editorial Design, were students Ross Milne and Abi Huynh for Woo #3. The competition is not open to student work, but since Woo was published in a sufficient quantity it was able to be entered under the Editorial Design Category. Congratulations, Ross and Abi! An exhibit of winning submissions was held at the Hong Kong Bank building’s Pendulum Gallery from April 1 to April 11. Spring Cleaning with Meaning Update Thanks to everyone who donated to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Shelter. We were overwhelmed with the amount and quality of items dropped off to our office. A very special thank you goes out to Lauren’s sister, Alison, who owns a children’s clothing store in Port Moody. Alison donated at least three boxes of brand new clothes, bedding and other wonderful items. If you are in the Port Moody area, drop by Style Kid on Clarke Street! Farewells and Greetings! Edith Kirkpatrick, Acting Director for Continuing Studies, will be leaving ECI April 18th to take on new responsibilities at the BC Safety Authority. New Smoking Regulations Effective March 31, 2008, the Ministry of Health Tobacco Control has implemented a new bylaw regarding smoking around public and work place entryways, window openings and air intakes. The Occupational Health & Safety Committee (OH&S) strongly supports this initiative and signage will be posted around the Institute reminding everyone that smoking is prohibited within six metres of doorways, windows and air intakes. Of course, the best thing to do is quit smoking altogether and if the picture above doesn’t inspire you to do so, you may wish to visit Health Canada at http://www.hcsc.gc.ca/hl-vs/tobac-tabac/quit-cesser/index_e.html for some helpful tips and information on quitting. Visit department blogs at: http://blogs.eciad.ca/blog/category/department-blogs/. We will soon be adding our own ECIAD customized templates that you will be able to choose as your new blog presentational theme. For more information on or about getting setup with your own faculty or department blog please contact Grant Gregson, Coordinator of the Teaching and Learning Centre at tlc@eciad.ca or visit the TLC Blog, with lots of online resources for faculty, at http://blogs.eciad.ca/tlc/ Emily Goes Green When recycling Post-It Notes, cut off the sticky part and throw away in your garbage – recycle the rest of the PostIt Note. The sticky part gums-up the recycling machinery and in some cases, large batches of paper are thrown out and not recycled because of this. However, you can now purchase Post-It Notes that have water-soluble sticky parts that do break down and don’t cause problems.
