Hastings), Virginia Achtem and Lesley Clarke wrap up their show “Dwelling Places” on the 27th of April. If you haven't seen it yet, Virginia’s light boxes are worth the trip. Get her to give the lights-out guided tour. The next exhibit there opens March 3 with former ECCAD painting instructor dane Stanier and Bruce Cobanli exhibiting their paintings. The gallery is usually open 2 - 6 p.m. At the Carnegie Centre, former ECCAD student Mark Gaskin is exhibiting a series of eight paintings and a sculptural piece under the title of “Flux”. The show continues until March 6th on the 3rd floor. If you’ve never been to the Carnegie Centre because it’s in a bad part of town or if it’s beneath your ambitions, you’re missing something. At Presentation House, all photographers should get out in aflash to see “Athletes: Photographs 1860 - 1986" which runs til February 28th. The next show sounds like an awkward palindrome: “Eye of the Mind/Mind of the Eye.” It opens March 9 (8-10 pm) and continues until April 10. Photographs and text includes work by our very own Marian Penner Bancroft. The Charles H. Scott Gallery has “Complex Objects/Simple Forms” curated by ex-director (now VAG Director) Willard Holmes. The show features work by three Vancouver artists, Julie Duschenes, Enn Erislau and Robert Young. March 9 - 13, in conjunction with Granville Island’s 10th Anniversary and Open House, the gallery will host a guest curated exhibition of work by advanced painting students from ECCAD. Nomi Kaplan exhibits “Brooklyn Illuminations”, photographic collages from March 23 - April 24. Speaking about the VAG, from February 19 through May 1, “Contemporaries of Ann Kipling: Drawing from B.C.” includes work by ECCAD instructor Gary Lee-Nova and Graham Gillmore. Scott director Ted Lindberg is soonto be ex- BAG director as well. The BAG shows “Wayne Eastcott: The Printed Painting”. trom March 4 to April 4. Noted as one of Canada’s foremost experimental printmakers, Eastcott will be giving a lecture at the gallery Thursday March 10 at 8:00 p.m. All printmakers are advised to skateboard their way over there and view this masterly challenging of purist conceptions. Ah, the Concourse Gallery! Currently “Photophilia’, a selection of photographs by the second and third year photo students is on exhibit until March 1. One of the most varied and interesting shows yet. Deborah Koenker, ECCAD instructor in Foundation and printmaking is preparing work for the Contemporary Art Gallery at 555 Hamilton Street, to open March 8 (8 p.m.). The installation is entitled “Learning from Salmon” and should be a surprise to those people who think she only works two-dimensionally. Artspeak at 311 West Hastings (2nd floor) shows ex-ECCADer Brenna George til March 5. “Queen of Puddings’ is a series of photographic collages with text incorporating cookbook recipes and She-ra cartoons. Must be seen to be believed. The SAG opens on Sunday February 28th with a group exhibit “100 Odd Ways to Have Fun”, an exhibition of high and low amusements. ECCAD grad Lowell Morris performs “Love and Gravity” at 2 pm on opening day using feathers and apples as props. Must be seen to be believed. The co-operatively designed Public Dreams venture, “The Prior St. Art Project’, incorporating the work of ECCAD Bees guy Mike Banwell, can be viewed along Prior St. from March 11 - April 2 (Details inside, page 5). Curious George continues to flirt with disaster, gigging at the Waterfront this Saturday the 27th of February, as they open for S.N.F.U. They go on to live long and prosper at the Arts Club final punk bash on Sunday February 28. Wear knee pads. Another show (ending on the 27th) is “Urban Icons” by Hillary Wood at the grunt gallery. Hillary is one of only a handful of artists using the ancient medium of egg tempura (sic). The grunt is at 209 E 6th Ave. Phone 875-9516. The Community Arts Council at 837 Davie Street has “Our City’s Essence”, mixed media work until March 5, followed by “Elevator Dreams” (an uplifting show) and “Transformations of the Urban Landscape” by Jean Kares and Brad Lamoureux, respectively.
