Planet of the Arts vol.3 no.6 April 1988 Dan Wood 1964 - 1988 The following is a tribute to Dan Wood. It was read by Art Perry at Dan’s memorial service March 10, at the Hollyburn Funeral Home: Please excuse me for reading from a prepared text. Believe me, it’s not that | don’t have endless things to say from my heart, but I’d just feel better reading something today. At first | thought of presenting a crazy 8-mm movie | made with Dan in Paris. It is full of life and laughter. Then | thought | might read you some of his witty letters that would leave us all laughing with tears. And then there are almost fifteen years worth of photos of Dan that | have taken . . exhibitions, events and travelling with him in France. | have hundreds of those. We could all watch in amazement the apothe- osis of his hair as an artform. But of all Dan’s gifts and charms, it was with his talent as an artist that | know he was most committed. Personally, | thought Dan was brilliantly mature and advanced in his understanding of contemporary art. He really did have a mega-mind for grasping the ideas complex ideas . . . of our time. Sometimes his brightness was almost frightening. | remember seeing his works for grad show and saying to myself... “This is not the work of a student. This is so well- understood and well-resolved.” | remember too when Sandy and | got back from Europe after my leave from the art college, Dan came over and brought us a welcome home gift of one of his recent painings: it is still there over-our bed. Another summer Dan worked with Sandy at the Contemporary Art Gallery and he surprised her with a portrait he’d painted of her. (Pause). It was the kind of unselfish generosity and love that I'll remember about Dan. He was a storehouse of talents and gifts. . . and he shared them. We all know, if Dan had any spare money it was not to be saved but spent with his friends. For myself, what I will miss the most will be our long conversations . . . conversations that went from Notices Vancouver Art Gallery: Members of the Vancouver Art Gallery’s Long Range Planning Committee will present their proposals at a public forum at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
