Page Thirteen Costume Design By Margaret Corry HREE afternoons a week you will find the “Costume Design Class” working (sometimes under most trying conditions) in the garret of the Central School—an artistic if somewhat chilly atmosphere. The work during the past year has been more advanced. Problems have been completed, beginning with children’s designs, underwear and negligees, spatter-work, on through hats, designed from flowers as inspira- tions, draping of patterns on figures and finally to the designing of various types of frocks, coats, suits, etc. Many different techniques for use in illustrating and newspaper “cuts” have been employed. However, each of these drawings is not just a picture, but a nice problem in itself. The design of the costume must, of course, be truly original, which requires a thorough knowledge of materials, construction, draping, and, last but not least, an effective way of showing the costume designed. The class attended different fashion shows and sketched the costumes and one after- noon we were shown through the Universal Knitting Mills and were enlightened as to how patterns are woven into material. At times we designed costumes for individual types and personalities. For this work we made quick sketches from life of the actual person for whom we were designing. The costume was then illustrated on a costume figure, the pose taken from the quick life-sketch. This is indeed one of the most interesting branches of the work, and the true foundation of “Costume Design.” Before Christmas we had the opportunity to design for the stage. However, we did not go into this very extensively at the time, but will before the course of work is finished. This briefly covers a year of most interesting work under Mrs. Sharland’s capable supervision. Evening Classes By E. McGregor W E, as night students, have enjoyed a very successful term, and we feel that our time has been well rewarded. It has been extremely interesting, and our instructors have done everything to make the classes attractive and enjoyable. Mr. Scott acted as supervisor, and through his endeavors the course was broadened considerably. There were several classes, taking in the
