PLANET OF THE ARTS: 5 Platform < Pamela Tagle CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT My name is Pamela Joan Tagle and I’m a fourth year Graphic Design Student who has been at Emily Carr since Foundation. I have always held an interest in affairs that directly affect our school and the students within. In early October 1985 myself and two other students started a petition against the new island parking regulations. We also took that petition directly to Granville Island Administration. I believe the parking situation for students is almost solved. Iam also involved as a president of a group called Chomp. We sponsored two of the three pub nites last year as well as other fund raising events in order for our group to go to New York this October 3. I was responsible for the total organi- zation of our group to acquire an itinerary, hotel, air book- ing, publicity. I feel that we were successful in our fund raising pub nites and see no reason why we can’t re-instate well organized pub nites in our school. I have had a good deal of experience in organization and public relations and believe I would make a productive Stu- dent Society President. I will do the job with efficiency, fairness, and intelligence. I feel that running as an indepen- dent allows the council to be formed from a diversity of stu- dents who hold varying views of the needs of the school. By forming a true representation of Emily Carr this would allow us to reach a greater percentage of students and their needs. I would like to see the Student Society form regular office hours so as to be more accessable to the average stu- dent. I feel it is necessary to properly discuss issues at a more personal level but briefly: 1. A student run gallery is an issue that I agree with — we must arrange it so that is can be a permanent place for students which will not close during the summer. 2. Cafeteria — the quality of service and food must be dealt with this year. We have a lot of power behind us to alter the situation properly: — re-furnishing is needed. — reduce number of advertising posters and make room for shows to be hung. 3. I say yes to funding: — to guest artists. — students in need. — bike parking. 4. Pub Nites — must be brought back to the school by proper organization such as having proper security, time limits, good clean-up crews. *Chomp did it! I believe I can bring good organizational skills and open communication to the Student Society if elected President. I know that the independent candidates have a lot to offer to the society by the sheer fact that they feel strongly enough about Emily Carr and their own abilities to run for office as an individual. I strongly recommend that you vote for these capable people... myself included! Thank-you. Rich Nielsen CANDIDATE FOR VICE-PRESIDENT A.K.A. MALIBU KEN. 3rd year printmaking(Litho Etching). Single 6’2“ Socialist. Boyish good looks and charm. Working for Steve Wong as printshop apprentice to a well oiled maintenance of the Printmaking Deptartment. This is the first time I have been involved in any organiza- tion, which means no council experience. But my strong ideas about how the council should and shouldn’t be run even out the balance. Because of what I have seen in the past two student coun- cils, I cringe at the thought of a replay. My platform is one of reform and social student function (not just pub nights) and overall communication between students, staff and us. I also question the procedure and ethics, involved with the previous councils ways of dispersing funds, and wish to re- ctify and clarify these publicly this year. The more student run galleries there are the better. It is extremely important for young artists to have their work shown. The running of student galleries is one of the best ways to spend student money. A direct return on invest- ment. How can a student body function if no one knows each other? And for all the bleeding hearts out there that say it is hard to meet intoxicated people, come out and try it some time. Seriously though, social functions are very important for many reasons: a) To meet other students, thereby uniting the student body. A united student body can do just about anything. b) Blowing off some steam — it allows people to let their hair down and boogie. c) Allows students to see staff for what they are — people and fellow artists. Cafeteria food is terrible but there is an alternative, it is called the market. But if the whole student body feels strongly enough about the food and poor service; Fine - we are not bound by contract and can deal with the problem as is seen fit by the majority. ie - a new food company Parking is a hassle and it should be free for staff and stu- dents. Convenient stalls and proper patrolling to eliminate mis-use is important. Bike racks are another problem. They should be provided with frame locking accessibility and be under cover to protect them from the elements. Vancouver has a growing art community which is just starting to be recognized by the public at large. I think we should contribute whenever possible to this by bringing guest artists in to speak, and to see what this city has to offer. As for intown artists, we should definitely give them the opportunity to speak and show the students what is here in our community. I feel that it is a duty to help young artists in financial binds with loans or grants to allow exposure of their work, whether it be transportation costs, gallery fees, or material costs. I think public meetings and a visible high profile, acces- sible student council that is easy to find, easy to talk to and devoted to attending all public meetings will help com- munication between council and the student body. I think that council is a 24-hour-a-day job. I plan to always be wil- ling to talk to and help in the affairs of the student body. Student publications are a key link in the chain of communi- cation between the student body and council and they will receive my additional support. In closing, I would like to say that what I have written is a small part of my commitment to the office. I think actions speak louder than words and that todays student body is the chief concern. Kathryn Thom CANDIDATE FOR TREASURER I am‘a fourth year Graphic Design, Interdisciplinary stu- dent. I have been at Emily Carr since 2nd year; before trans- ferring to ECCAD I spent 3 years at U. Victoria pursuing a degree in Economics/Commerce I am an independent running for treasurer. I do not be- lieve an unproven party of friends from the same depart- ments is adequate qualification for student government. I believe to fairly represent the student body, the government should be made up of individuals with solid goals and open minds, from varied departments. A government can offer a variety of solutions to problems but will work together as a team of individuals for the best of the students. Not to satisfy personal egos or one facet of the student body. I sup- port all independents running for office. I feel that my extensive experience in handling finance would be a definite asset to the student society. I have had three years of Accounting at the University of Victoria, as well as two years as a bookkeeper/payroll officer for a chain of stores on Vancouver Island. I believe that I can help to set a standard in finance control for the student government, to finally get things straightened out and implement the new one-write accounting system that the school is thinking of, making things easier for this year’s government and the ones to follow. I believe in running things efficiently, with intelligence and integrity. To take the money given by you the student, as an investment, and to insure that the money be used to benefit the students as best possible. To insure there is equal distribution of profits/funds without playing the party politices game. There will be no more botched at- tempts at handling funds, and no more illegal dealings if I am elected Treasurer. I have been asked my opinion on the following. Each is an important issue and I would like to discuss them in length, but, to be brief: —Student run gallery: An excellent idea but only if it is one that is run throughout the year and years to come. | must offer everyone an equal chance to show and not favour one over the other for length or funding. —Pub nites: Extremely vital to the school. It is a social night not as an end in itself, but as a way to meet other stu- dents in an informal friendly atmosphere. It is also a great fundraiser. The profits which can be used to benefit the stu- dents by way of new equipment, guest artists, and other special events like a longer pub-nite outside of the college. —The cafeteria: Conditions are terrible to say the least! The atmosphere is lousy, the food overpriced, and the quality rock bottom. But, things can and will be changed. The stu- dent body wields more power to change this than they realize. Suppliers can be modified or replaced, but every- one has to work together. —The car parking problem is soon to be solved, announce- ments will be made.
