But a lot of times when a band yells all the time it seems really kind of sophomoric, but when Jon yelled It added a sort of depth to the music, that wasn’t there before. In a musical sense, there was really no place else to go. The Blues Explosion takes traditional blues structure and sentiment, and completely re- works it. You really don’t know where they are going next. In a way, they take a medium of the blues and rework and rework it at an almost free-form level, until they have a set of char- acters with which they express pure emotion. The only retro-type revival thing that I could think to compare them to would be Southern Cul- ture on the Skids, and when I saw them, they had six women from the audience throwing chicken into the crowd. Needless to say, in the city of Vancouver, which I think of as a fairly uptight and conservative city, I was completely amazed. I want to express what was going on.
