Inside the pamphlet were three photographs of Mark, each one showing a different aspect of his personality. In the first photo he was wearing a business suit; in the second, every day street clothes; and in the third, a rubber nose and glasses. BCTV was one of the companies that called Grady in for an interview. It was clear that Mark’s advertising campaign had made an impact when his prospective employer greeted him wearing a rubber nose and glasses. Mark graduated from Interdisciplinary Media in 1982. (The department is now known as Intermedia). And the summer job with BCTV turned into a career that is now in its seventeenth year. Mark’s theme of multiple images, like the one in the brochure, persists throughout his work. At BCTV that Mark began his training in computer graphics. This influenced and enabled him to move from paint on canvas to his brilliant computer mediated images. é Mark’s work focuses on issues of humanity and creates a narrative that consistently includes three key elements: history, art, and art history. Discussions of Grady’s pieces often include refer- ences to the theme of war and the work of Goya. Historical photographs, which are considered unalterable, are charged to an emotionally high pitch when Mark replaces the face of an army commander with that of his own. By doing this, Mark asks us to put ourselves in the shoes of his Soa subjects, and to consider the possibilities of what could have been an alternative future if we were er the ones making their decisions. Grady is not a formalist - the computer technology he uses to create his artwork always remains secondary to its content. The personal dimension is what evokes meaning in the work and provokes a reaction that engages the viewer in these monumental pieces. Mark Grady’s work was on view at Monte Clark Gallery, 1727 W. 3rd Ave. Now showing at the gallery is Chick Rice - Black ¢ Grey ¢ White [see ad at left] [FOCUS] 1996, Japan Dir.
