Abstract
This thesis considers shifting definitions of ‘liveness’ within the fields of performance, music, and visual arts. Liveness is explored through the dramaturgical processes of four artworks. The mechanics of the live event are discussed both in regards to the digital and analogue tools used in these projects and the cultural context from which they emerge. Oscillating between experiences of the personal and the public, this text proposes liveness as an active and relational phenomenon that is sustained by a communal desire for congregation and closeness. As audiovisual equipment, online communications, and analogue formats continue to reshape the parameters of spectatorship and gathering, conversations around sound, time, geography, and identity are also set in motion. Changing performer/audience dynamics and disparate forms of technological mediation warrant language beyond the written word. It is through an interdisciplinary practice connecting the vocabulary of the body, the stage, the gallery, and the urban landscape that one can question and engage with liveness in all its manifestations. |
