Oracle Bone Uncoded: Bridging Mandarin Cultural Heritage and Modern Language Acquisition through Visual Narratives

Language acquisition is an intricate process that transcends rote memorization, requiring learners to connect meaning, form, and cultural context. This research delves into the complexities of Mandarin language learning, emphasizing the historical and cultural richness embedded in its characters. By transforming ancient illustrations that became the basis of contemporary Mandarin – also called ""oracle bone script"" – this work bridges historical heritage with modern educational techniques, creating an interactive digital platform where users engage with the evolution of Chinese characters, tracing their journey from ancient symbols to contemporary forms. This project takes a visually immersive and storytelling-driven approach to help learners connect with Mandarin's logographic system. By weaving design and narrative together, it makes the learning process more engaging and helps with memory retention. Many non-native learners struggle with Mandarin characters because they often seem abstract, detached from their pictographic origins. This work aims to bridge that gap by showing how characters have evolved over time, making them feel more intuitive and connected to their history. Beyond language learning, the project also highlights the role of design in preserving cultural heritage and fostering cross-cultural exchange. Visual narratives can communicate meaning beyond words, making Chinese history and language more accessible to a wider audience.
