Abstract
Indigenous design has a significant role to play in the development of research and learning resources for Indigenous language reclamation and revitalization. This research explores the development of language material for Indigenous second language learners in the context of the home. Designing for the language reclamation journey through an Indigenous lens meant that I worked to understand the spoken and unspoken facets that impact the first phase of Indigenous second language learning (ISLL) and the role that language materials can play in regenerating our languages through the facilitation of our original practices in knowledge transmission. Insights from literature review, conversations with language experts, design explorations and reflecting on my own experience as an Indigenous second language learner led to insights and future pathways in understanding Indigenous designers’ role in improving outcomes for Indigenous language reclamation and revitalization. The research led to the creation of The Language Bundle, a prototype language reclamation kit for ᑕᗸᒡ households that will be adapted for the Cree language in the future. |
