Description / Synopsis
This piece is about the term “home” and the ways we may bridge the distances between our homes- spaces that we can identify as encompassing safety. It’s a brief telling of our bodies’ histories on this unceded land and lands we may long for. Allowing comfort and discomfort within us to navigate our lives, without ruling us. Noticing it’s presence, while allowing ourselves to also be present for loss. Through movement, words, and each other we can be representations of the fragments of our homes. 轴/軸/Axis has lived many lives since its inception. It was created for Vines Art Festival 2020 by Shana Wolfe and Rosemary Xinhe Hu. Vines 2020 was an online screening type format performance festival that was pre-recorded because of the pandemic. The entire festival took place in sacred parks around Vancouver. It was then transformed to a short stage performance for The Happening Dance Studio for another online showing which was shown live. This shortened version of 轴/軸/Axis is a combination of those two showings. I, Shana, am a first generation Japanese-Canadian dance artist and Xinhe is a first generation immigrant Chinese-Canadian poet so we drew inspiration from the movement and poetry from our lived experiences as Asian-Canadians. |

Description / Synopsis
Shana Wolfe is a dance artist on the territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Her artistic practice is based in dancing, performance and more recently in choreography, crocheting, and houseplant crafting. She toured throughout Europe with Ballet BC and attended Springboard Danse Montreal in 2018. Shana created her first piece, 轴/軸/Axis for Vines Art Festival in 2019 and is a part of Made In BC’s Des Arts Dehors/Dance Outside program for their 2020/2021 season. She is currently a member of OURO Collective. She aims to use her body as a site for investigating the delicacy of the spaces around her. She is interested in how as dancers and humans we are self-adapting, self-regulating, intuitive and intelligent bodies. Rosemary 昕禾 Hu (she/her) is a Chinese immigrant, a poet, linguist, and an educator relying on the unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. Rosemary’s research during her Speech Sciences degree at UBC has centered endangered Indigenous language preservation on Gitksan phonetics. Currently she holds the position of Gear Up Facilitator. Gear Up is a YWCA youth employment program, supporting youth as they gain bike mechanic skills and enter into the bike industry. Rosemary is also a mental health and disability justice advocate, and these identities consistently inform all of her artistic practices. In 2019 Rosemary collaborated with dance artist and friend Shana Wolfe on their creation commissioned work for Vines Art Festival titled: Axis. You can find Rosemary’s first self-published poetry chapbook at Massy Books in Vancouver’s vibrant and resilient Chinatown. |
