A STUDY OF MOVEMENTS RELATED TO THE LABOUR OF MANAGING INFORMATION: Gestures to illustrate the labour of librarians in university contexts

Part I: "Recommended Readings" - The conceptual/metaphorical movements broadly reference how librarians related to other ECU community members (staff and other faculty members), the nature of these relationships in the context of power, hierarchy, and agency. Movement prompts: workload, inviting, mystifying, contributing, scope creep, bumped, undervalued, collaboration, vigilent. Part II: "Professional Gestures" - This piece alludes to actual physical movements undertaken by librarians in the course of their workdays (e.g., office labour, the labour of providing instruction and research support services to library users, etc.) and labour that is more conceptual or metaphorical in nature. A STUDY OF MOVEMENTS RELATED TO THE LABOUR OF MANAGING INFORMATION was collaboratively choreographed by the team of three ECU librarians (Ana Diab, Vanessa Kam and Hillary Webb) and was performed 5 times from November - December 2023 in the Libby Leshgold Gallery as part of the Emily Carr University of Art and Design Faculty Exhibition: This Exhibition is Not an Exhibition, organized and curated by sessional faculty members Patryk Tom and Valérie Walker.
